Common questions

Which Google accounts can I use?

Magpie Mail is made for Google Workspace accounts. Sign in with your work account; if your organisation hasn’t allowed Magpie Mail, Google will say so on the sign-in page. Ask your Workspace administrator.

Why does Google ask for so many permissions?

Magpie Mail asks for everything it needs in one go: Gmail to read and send mail, Calendar for your events and free and busy times, Tasks, your contacts and company directory for addresses, and Google Meet for recordings and transcripts. It uses each one only for that part of the app. The privacy policy lists them all.

I’m not getting new-mail alerts.

Check that new-mail alerts are on in Magpie Mail’s Settings (under General on the Mac), and that notifications are allowed for Magpie Mail in your device’s Settings. Magpie Mail checks for new mail every minute while it’s running. On iPhone and iPad, when the app is closed, iOS decides how often it can check, so alerts can come late.

My widget is out of date.

Widgets can’t sign in to Google themselves. They show what Magpie Mail last fetched, so open the app to bring them up to date.

How do I make Magpie Mail my default email app?

On the Mac, use the Default Email App setting in Magpie Mail’s Settings. On iPhone and iPad, it can only be chosen in Settings › Apps › Default Apps › Email once Apple has approved it as a mail app, which hasn’t happened yet.

Can I read my mail offline?

Not yet. Magpie Mail keeps your mail in memory while it’s open and fetches it fresh from Google each time, so it needs a connection.

How do I remove an account?

Open Magpie Mail’s Settings › Accounts and tap Remove beside the account. Magpie Mail signs out on that device, asks Google to cancel its access, and deletes its saved sign-in. Your mail stays in Gmail.
